Cat on the loose
13 View(s)
2012-05-18 by rainbowmom
Anyone lost their cat? I can't see clearly what color but definitely it's dark and plain. This cat 'ate' 2 of the chick robins that were peacefully resting on their nest. After a few minutes, the cat came back again and knocked down their nest leaving the two poor remaining chicks on our porch. Hubby carefully put them back on their nest. The mother robin usually sat on them to keep them warm at night. But not tonight, haven't seen her around. I do hope the cat will find its way home tonight and not come back our porch.

What to look forward to...

There is always an apology after the fact! Just wait until they start their lessons at the mosque! Zero decency... even when teaching their kids! The curriculum had anti-Semitic course material and that is what their program was based on. Just wait!

Report a Typo or Correction .Complaints lead to zoning notice for Markham mosque

thsieh@yrmg.com
Members of the planned 16th Avenue mosque will either have to move or bring their current prayer hall into compliance, according to Markham’s bylaw chief.
Bill Wiles confirmed this week an official zoning notice was given to the congregation and their landlord after a bylaw officer investigated a complaint about improper use.
The prayer hall is at 9833 Hwy. 48, Unit 9 behind the Long & McQuade music store.
A blue Darul Iman sign is displayed on the side of the unit; the glass door has an office sign that reads, “Masjid Darul Iman, sisters entrance”.
A torn brothers’ entrance sign is at the rear of the building.
Mr. Wiles said the bylaw officer found the unit used as “musallah” for Masjid Darul Iman of the Islamic Society of Markham isn’t properly zoned for places of worship.
Based on activities documented on the Masjid Darul Iman website, the address has been used by the congregation since last August.
Mr. Wiles said the investigation was first picked up by the fire department in December, when it conducted a random inspection of the entire building.
The matter was reported to the bylaw department for checkup.
Mr. Wiles said there was discussion about the unit being used as a commercial school.
After a formal complaint was made last month, Mr. Wiles said the matter was investigated further, which found clarifications on the Masjid Darul Iman website.
“It made it conclusive enough (that it’s being used as a place of worship),” Mr. Wiles said.
Prior to moving to the Long & McQuade plaza, Masjid Darul Iman operated out of two units at 9889 Hwy. 48, immediately north of their current address.
An April 2011 newsletter posted on daruliman.org indicated an official complaint was received at the former address by building management regarding parking and gave instructions on where to park to avoid lease revocation.
All cars must be parked at the back of the plaza for regular salat and during the pickup and drop-off times for the madrassa, the newsletter stated.
It went on to say members can’t park in the plaza for Jummah prayers.
“The alternate is to park in the plaza across the street,” the newsletter said.
A property search shows the building is owned by Krashnik Investments Ltd.
A woman who answered the phone at the company’s rental number Thursday said they signed the lease “with the people that moved in” and the building is “strictly social and recreational” with a dance studio and music store on site.
Mr. Wiles said while the property is zoned industrial and warehousing, a number of amendments have been made to the bylaw permitting other uses on site.
He said the property owner and members of the Masjid Darul Iman will have the standard 30 days to comply — they can either relocate or apply for proper zoning through a rezoning or minor variance application.
Atif Khan, a member of the Masjid Darul Iman board, noted Thursday the current location is temporary until the group can move into its new mosque.

This was sent out by the MRRCP to the Residents. It is clear that we need to speak up and against the motion that the Town council wants, which is to not be part of the OMB...

Upon reading the Minutes of the March 20, 2012 Markham Town Council Meeting there was a motion tabled to:

REMOVE THE TOWN OF MARKHAM FROM THE JURISDICTION OF THE ONTARIO MUNICIPAL BOARD AND ASKING THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO TO ABOLISH THE ONTARIO MUNICIPAL BOARD (OMB)

It's in Section 8 - Notices of Motions of the March 20, 2012 Minutes from the meeting at: http://www2.markham.ca/markham/ccbs/indexfile/html/council/cl120320.htm

This motion was Moved by Howard Shore and Seconded by Logan Kanapathi.

In the preamble to the motion it states that “municipal councillors are the elected officials most closely tied to the residential and business community and have the broadest understanding of the issues that affect their neighbourhoods; and, whereas municipal councillors have the obligation to make decisions on planning matters in the best interests of their community at large.”

Given events of the past few months, do we really believe that the majority of Markham Town Councillors have our best interests at heart when it comes to making planning decisions?

They are requesting:

“That the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) be requested to amend the Planning Act, the Heritage Acts, and all other legislation under which the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) operates and has jurisdiction, to abolish the OMB and to provide that decisions of municipal councils are only appealable to the courts on matters of substantive law.”

This kind of motion should be of serious concern to all the residents of Markham!

Ask yourself this; Why does Markham Town Council want to exempt themselves from Provincial oversight and want to abolish the OMB? What do they have to hide?

After reading the motion, one could seriously begin to question whether some of our elected representatives think they are above the law and that they can do whatever they like with little accountability. This further shows the disregard some of our so called elected representatives have not only towards the Markham residents they represent but also of the laws of the Province of Ontario.

Given the embarrassment and revelations that the Town of Markham suffered at the OMB hearing regarding the Taoist Temple in Markham two weeks ago, pertaining to the incorrect bylaw that our association brought to the attention of the Town on October 28, 2011, it is no wonder that some Markham councillors want to exempt themselves from any oversight from the Province and to abolish the OMB. (read the article about the Flawed By-law)

It is difficult enough for average citizens and groups to appeal ill-conceived and wrong planning decisions by Town Council as it is, however at least with the oversight of the Province and the OMB this is one body residents can appeal to. Without the OMB local residents and groups would have even fewer options in the way of appealing decisions made by council they disagree with.

ALL MARKHAM RESIDENTS SHOULD BE EXTREMELY CONCERNED BY THIS MOTION AND THE LENGTHS TO WHICH SOME ON MARKHAM TOWN COUNCIL WILL GO IN THEIR QUEST FOR LITTLE ACCOUNTABILITY AND CONTROL OVER EVERY DEVELOPMENT ISSUE IN MARKHAM.

Given the ill-conceived over development and planning decisions Markham Town Hall has made and has been making in our town do we really want them operating without any Provincial oversight? WE SAY NO!

We have confirmed with the Town’s Clerks office that this motion will be formally heard and voted on by Markham Town Council at the next Council Meeting scheduled for April 3, 2012 @ 7pm.

If you are concerned what is and has been going on, you really should be attending the meeting!

Because this will be an item on the Agenda and this is an open meeting we can make a deputation to speak to the motion. Not only that, YOU as individual residents can also come and make a deputation to speak out against this motion and encourage council to do the right thing for a change and vote down the motion.

A CALL TO ACTION:

We need your support and also need you to show up at the Markham Town Council meeting on Tuesday April 3, 2012 @ 7pm!

We would also like to encourage you to not only show up but also make a deputation SPEAKING OUT AGAINST THIS MOTION!

When we first moved here (2004) there were plans for a high school. Well 8 years later and still nothing. I emailed the yrd school board and here is what I got.

Me: Is there any plans for a secondary school (high school) for markham at castlemore ave and delray dr?
When we first moved in (2004) there were plans for one there. The lot has been empty ever since.

yrdsb:I am forwarding your inquiry to a member of our Planning Services team who can give you a more accurate answer to your question… thanks..

Yrdsb: We do not have a set opening date, if we build on this site. Timing of building the school depends on availability of the site from the developer, a threshold of students in the area, and funding from the Ministry of Education.

YRDSB does have an ‘option agreement’ with the developer for this site as a secondary school. When that agreement expires in 2014, we will make a decision as to whether to purchase the site, or release it.

Just goes to prove that us Concerned Residents are on the right track and will keep on keeping on with this fight to have the Mosque reloacted to a more suitable location that won't interfer with our Residental area. No one is objecting to having a mosque built, it is the location and that property and the size and the insufficient parking that is the issue!

If you call, you can continue as normal but you need to tell them. NO CHANGE, NO CONTRACT. You have until April 2nd or they will automatically change you to a contract!
My water heater rental for direct is on my Enbridge bill, they will transfer you.

Wow, what a con!

If you're looking for a venue for your kid's birthday party...AVOID KIDS ON THE LOOSE PLAYLAND & CAFE located at:

114 Anderson Ave
Markham, ON L6E1A5

We recently had our grandchild's birthday party at this venue and we were basically ripped-off! There were so many additional & miscellaneous costs that were added to the final bill and these were not even in the contract. The balance that we're supposed to pay was only a couple of hundreds and the owner added several costs to the final bill that amounted to $ 740+ and some change. All the add-on dollars were scribbled in pencil on their copy of the contract and we were not given a copy of the contract with the add-ons and obviously cheated us!

Hi Everyone,
While at the Town meeting the other night, a presentation was given out to some men about all the historial work they found and attend to for Markham. I thought it would be interesting to post about the history of this area..there are some very interesting facts about what the land was used for and who settled here:

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to update you in case you were not informed of the upcoming MRRCP meeting this Saturday the 25th. Should you already be a member or wanting to become one, you can go to their website and register to attend, seats are limited. They will be discussing and updating what is happening, such as the legal action that has begun and more. Not sure if they will bring up the 2 other proposed mosques or not (one in Boxgrove and the other in Stouffville). I sure hope that with these two developments that they both will be done in the proper way with informing the community and involving the community to have a say along with hopefully being in an appropriate loaction to not disrupt anyone commute or near a school or peoples homes/streets and to have proper parking to not have to use public roads.

Here is the site to register to attend: www.mrrcp.com

Hi All,

We'll be making a small video to promote Greensborough as a great community and place to live. As input towards this, we'd like suggestions on the top 3 keywords or attributes of this community, so we can be sure to highlight these in the video. Attributes could be family-oriented, friendly, close to train, etc.

We look forward to your input and we'll be sure to put up the video on the website once it's complete. It'll also be used to promote the homes we sell in Greensborough.

As a side note, if anybody is interested in being featured in the video, send me an email at mail@allardteam.com

http://www.yorkregion.com/opinion/letters/article/1290832--group-also-believes-in-religious-freedom

Group also believes in religious freedom

Will you want to live in Markham two years from now?
That is the question I’ve been asking since taking on the role of president of Markham Residents for Responsible Community Planning four months ago.
It was with a rueful smile I read Thursday’s edition, published after my deputation to town council.
I then read the letter to the editor two days later, which was a statement of support for the Islamic Society mosque by 17 pastors and reverends of Christian churches.
My smile quickly gave way to a deep sense of disappointment. Why?
Simple, it was in this newspaper Sept. 29 I first learned a massive 28,000-square-foot structure was going to be built on 16th Avenue on less than two acres, just blocks from my home.
Moving into action, I and others quickly discovered that:
1. A 160-unit townhouse development was planned next to it, backing onto Swan Lake.
2. The Amica Retirement Home, next to that development had plans to add a second, larger wing.
3. The large crane that had gone up on Hwy. 48, just metres north of the Markham Museum was for the purpose of constructing twin 18- and 20-storey condo towers with more than 430 units.
4. In addition, another 50 townhouses were included in that development.
In short, the beautiful town and neighborhood where we had bought our dream home nine years earlier had been placed in serious jeopardy by the developers of the mosque, townhouses and condos.
Simple mathematics dictates that in addition to worshippers, between 1,500 to 2,000 new residents will be moving into an area of less than one square kilometre in a two-year period.
Let me deal with the elephant in the room once and for all.
Our association believes just as strongly in freedom of religion and the right to have a place of worship as the religious representatives who signed the statement.
But we cannot and will not accept projects that will destroy the historical, cultural and esthetic heritage of Markham; create severe traffic and pedestrian safety issues on overburdened roads or encourage illegal and dangerous parking.
And we will not allow unprecedented population density without the necessary infrastructure or planning.
Still want to live in Markham? Let’s fight for it!

Did you also know that the proposed mosque design also includes a morgue facility - to prepare dead bodies before burial?

And that the actual area of the mosque is NOW 32,000 sq feet (instead of 28,000) and the architects have quietly dropped the mezzanine floor from their plans (which was to accommodate women praying) and are setting off a part of the main hall for the same.

I don't know why the "RACE CARD" is always taking over this subject at hand. No one is against a NEW mosque being built in Markham, it is all about this one being chosen on a wrongly sized lot and location of land that is being proposed.

It sounds like it is much needed, no issues what so ever on this. It just needs to be in a space/location where it will not disrupt our daily lives weather it is through commuting on the roads, taking our streets up with parking because of inadequate spaces, the historic area that will not fit etc. etc. etc. NO ONE is objecting to a mosque being built in Markham. We all need to be happy where it is located is the REAL and TRUE issue.

As for the morgue/dead body issue...I am pretty sure (and this too is NOT a racist remark because it is an understanding of their ways) that many Chinese residents will be very alarmed with the bad spirit/omen issue being in their neighborhood. Plus there are health issues now, hearing this as well. Isn't there special rules and permits and licenses that need to be obtained for this with this being a RESIDENTIAL zone
Why oh Why has the Town not called a meeting for us all to be able to ask and get answers before this was EVER put forth this far!!! They are the ones at fault here for all of this and the non communication for public input and information!
This is something that we all need to be comfortable with...ALL races and cultures and religions! That is why this needs to be accepted but in the proper location. We all matter, for or against this, and this needs to be resolved to make us ALL comfortable and happy! The logical and right thing to do is to just RELOCATE this and the Town can do this and work with EVERYONE to make it happen! That is where we all come in to DEMAND them to do this NOW!

Don't just read this...DEMAND this to be FIXED!

There is an upcoming Town Meeting this Tuesday evening and the MRRCP has asked me to post to let you all know.

Tuesday January 17, 2012 @ 7pm - Join Us In Protest at the Markham Development Services Committee Meeting

We need your support to remind Town Hall and to keep the pressure on to reverse these ill-conceived projects. There is strength in numbers and we need to remind them that residents are not happy with the decisions taken. The best way to do that is to turn out in large numbers on Tuesday!

Council & Standing Committee meetings are open to the public and held at the Markham Civic Centre, 101 Town Centre Blvd. (northwest corner of Hwy. 7 & Warden Ave.) www.markham.ca

Thanks very much for your support and we look forward to working with you to get the results we all desire!

Please Greensborough and surrounding areas go to www.mrrcp.com and register and support them if you have not already. I don't mean to just sign the petition, I MEAN JOIN AND SUPPORT! They are fighting all these major issues for you, me , US. They need our support and if you cannot volunteer any time to spread the news, give out flyers, attend meetings then at the very least you can pay the 25.00 fee for them to keep on keep on fighting for us all. That is a LOT cheaper than our houses going down in value. The more that sign and join the more they can do.
They are fighting our causes and the majority of them doing this for US live in the older areas of Markham Village. Come on Greensborough, don't just be mad about what is going on, support and join and stop...

The OVERDEVELOPMENT that is occurring in our area. Stop the Townhouses and SAVE Swan Lake. Stop the Condo's, too much too fast and no road widening IS NOT RIGHT. Too much traffic as it is. and STOP the mosque from being built on Williamson and 16th and have it relocated to a proper more suitable area!

PLEASE...TAKE ACTION AND JOIN!

After flirting with putting a piece of town-owned land up for sale, Markham council spared a small natural habitat from being paved this week.
The less-than-1-acre property at the southeast corner of Hwy. 7 and Ninth Line will be retained by the town for a future parkette, Deputy Mayor Jack Heath said.
The decision came after residents from the Sherwood Amber Glen Ratepayers Association pleaded with councillors to keep the land for a natural park area while reps from Lindvest Properties, developer for the Grand Cornell, urged the approval of the land’s sale.
In a recorded vote, Mayor Frank Scarpitti and Councillor Don Hamilton voted to approve the land sale.
The remaining councillors voted in favour of turning it into a parkette.
Mr. Heath said east Markham can always use more natural space. He said he hopes the region or the province that owns the adjacent vacant land can work with the town to create a combined parkette of less than two acres.
“I can’t see they have any use for the land,” Mr. Heath said.

Here I am minding my own business - ready to drive home from the Food Basic parking lot when a guy in a Blue Chrysler Town & Country minivan drives up to my car and says that he is a installer for a Home Theatre company and is in the neighbourhood to install a projector at a home. However, by mistake he was given an extra High Definition projector that he doesn't want to return to the warehouse as his warehouse pick-up receipt doesn't show that he received two projectors instead of one that he needed to install. So he simply wants to sell the extra projector for some quick cash rather than returning it to the wareshouse since his boss will simply sell it anyway as there is no 'official' record of extra projector being given out to installer on the receipt.

So long story short - he will sell me this projector/projector screen, which is worth $2000, to me for a $1000. He showed me the projector box (branded as Alumen a-700) and a projecttion screen, brand new and still sealed in its orginal packaging. At first I said no since I didn't need it and that it was probably stolen but he was persistent and told me that it wasn't stolen and showed me the warehouse receipt again. Given that it is the Christmas season and I was looking for some electronics for the house, I finally relented and negotiated an all in price of $400 for both. At first he pretended to want to walk away as the offered price was too little quickly decided to take me up on my offer of $400 as I seem to be a nice guy! He picked up the stuff from his van and put it in my car and said that we should both be happy as he got some extra cash while I got a great deal. Just as I was about to leave I asked him if I can take a picture of his van so that I have his license plate number - just in case I find out that the stuff is stolen. Interestingly, he had no issues with me taking the picture of his van.

So finally I come home, excited about my purchase and wanted to learning about my new projector, and did an internet search only to find out that this is a common scam often refered to as a 'White Van Speaker Scam'. So here I am stuck with an inferior piece of sh*t that is probably as fire hazard. I guess it is true what they say...BUYER BEWARE!!

The license plate of the Light Blue Town & Country Minivan is BLST 515.

This is from the Economist from last night Council Meeting:

A community group, lobbying for the relocation of the approved Markham mosque, took its concerns to council once again last night.
“The issues are still the same ... we are not going away,” said Alex Hardy of Markham Residents for Responsible Planning.
The group hasn’t received a response from the town about its traffic, safety, parking, congestion and preservation concerns, Mr. Hardy said.
While mosque-triggered overdevelopment issues, raised by residents, were not on the agenda at Tuesday’s meeting, Mr. Hardy was given 10 minutes to address council on behalf of the group.
However, resident Bhupen Karia and others stayed for the meeting, demanding to be heard.
Mr. Hardy asked council if a new traffic study was in the works, not just at the intersection of Williamson Road and 16th Avenue, where the mosque and a proposed townhouse development will be built, but the bottlenecked area of Hwy. 48 and 16th, where a condominium is under construction, north of Markham Museum.
“We want to see some movement on these issues from town council,” Mr. Hardy said.
The meeting became heated when Mr. Karia claimed he was told by a planning department staff member all mosque files are in Mayor Frank Scarpitti’s office.
Doesn’t have all files
Mr. Scarpitti asked Mr. Karia to get the name of the individual he dealt with at the planning department.
“To suggest that I have all the files — do you know how ridiculous that is?” Mr. Scarpitti said.
“I don’t have enough room in my office for all the files.”
The mayor offered to meet with residents after the meeting.
“I’m happy to talk with you anytime, sir, that’s how I work in this municipality and I’m proud of it,” he said

These "National Home Services" scam artists are back ....

These "National Home Services" scam artits sales people are back on Alfred Paterson Drive. We just had one come to the door this eveing (unannounced of course) claiming that he wasn't selling anything but he insisted on coming into our home to check our water heater ... I refused of course and asked him to leave ... but he was very aggressive in his manner.

Last Thanksgiving weekend we also had a similar type scam sales person from some unknown company come to the door insisting that he needed to enter our home and check our water filtration system (we don't even have one) ... the fact of the matter is that Town Of Markham water that we get from our taps and drink is exceptionally clean and is actually put to stricter testing and controls for purity than even most bottled water companies! (The Town will confirm this if you call them and ask) ... the bottom line is, these scam sales persons are NOT needed and certainly not welcome in your home. You don;t have to let them in.

DON'T get into a confrontation with them, DON'T let them in your home and DON'T sign anything.

Ask them to leave and if the don't they refuse, let them know that they are trespassing on your property!

Pass this on ... let all our neighbour's be fully aware.

If anyone knows of the names to avoid of scam companies knocking on your door or calling you on the phone other than "National Home Services", please share it with us all. Thanks.
