Hi Greensborough Residents,

My son is currently in a home daycare (part-time) and I would like to switch him to a licensed day care or Montessori in the area.

As this was a last minute decision, we have been unsuccessful to-date in finding care for him on a part-time basis (2 - 3 days a week).

Any suggestions/recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance Greensborough Residents.

YMF Hair Salon - Review

I had spent the last few months looking for a new hair salon and happened to come across an advertised posting on mygreensborough.com from YMF Hair Salon, which opened a few weeks ago.

I decided to give them a try them, but was sceptical due to the fact that this was a brand new hair salon.

I was one of their first clients and was truly impressed with the staff and services at YMF. Both stylists that were at the salon during my visit were very kind and friendly.

I had my hair cut and styled by Feeling and was impressed with her knowledge and professionalism. I told her exactly what I wanted and she delivered 100%.

I have to say no more fear - I have finally found 'my' hair salon and stylist. I would highly recommend them.

My wife and I would like to recommend Ivy League Montessori (ILM) to any couple considering out-of-home care for their children. Our daughter has been attending ILM since October 2008 and has received warm and personal care by various members of the ILM team. Under the owner's oversight and management, we feel comforted and privileged knowing that our little girl is loved and treated with tenderness. More than simply the owner of the establishment, the proprietor is warm, notably accredited and experienced, while easily approachable and open to discussion. The owner also has a pleasant way and demeanor and has been highly instrumental (along with her dedicated and friendly staff) in the whole potty-teaching phase within which our daughter finds herself at this time. It is obvious to us that all staff members work hard at providing a nurturing and loving environment for our child. We feel privileged and fortunate that our little girl is learning new things every day - and rather quickly, within a dynamic multi-cultural setting. Our daughter is taught to be respectful and caring of others and their diverse backgrounds as well as her surroundings which is building a strong foundation upon which her future development and successes will be based. ILM offer many activities and engage in various holiday events (such as Valentine's, Halloween), not the least of which is xmas - where all parents come together to celebrate and have the opportunity to enjoy watching their children sing and open gifts with excitement. As parents, knowing that our little girl is receiving well-balanced and nourishing meals, while receiving positive commentary on how well she is doing on a almost daily basis is the most rewarding part of the day. -Mario

Hi all,

We've recently tried to donate a few of our kids toys to a local donation store and we've been told that due to the size of the store they cannot house a lot of the toys and items that they receive. So, the items are either shipped off to "no mans land" or is thrown out in the trash. Once we heard that we've decided that instead of having all these toys and items go to waste that we would start our own "shop". We would like to collect any baby/kids items that are gently used and are in good condition. We will then find new homes for them where these items would be appreciated and played with by another children instead of being thrown away. We all know how expensive toys and clothes can be for some family, so we want to take this opportunity to give back and help these family out.

If you're interested in donating any gently used baby/kids toys or clothing, please contact me at liztseng@yahoo.ca.

Thank you for reading my ad and I hope to hear from you soon.

Liz

Nu look hair salon is located in the Greensborough shopping plaza, next to the convinience store.I have been there twice and had unpleasent experience both the times. I have not seen such an unprofessional salon before. The lady does not have any attiquetes on how to greet the customers, she wont even smile. They are bias for their own community customers too. Believe me or go and have an experience yourself.

Basement - Condensation or Slow Leak?

We've noticed recently (after a day of heavy rain) that there is a bit of water collected at the bottom portion of the insulation on our basement walls. This seems to occur at various spots along the back wall of the house and a few feet along the side walls (from the back). When we press on the plastic cover, a bit of water drops out. There is some water/rust stains on the foundation in the areas where there is water now so it is possible that this has happened in the past but we are only noticing it now.

We will check with the builder but in the meantime, would anyone know if this is as a result of condensation or a slow leak from cracks in the foundation? As these areas are covered by the insulation, we cannot see if there are cracks. Has anyone else had this experience and if so how did you resolve it?

Any feedback/comments would be greatly appreciated.

On the morning of August 3/10 our pre-teen daughter was walking our dog. She was followed for a short time by a man probably in his 40s-50s. This individual caught up with our daughter and kicked the dog. He then put his hand in her face before running back down the street.

This occured at the corner of Kingsmill Crt and Thornwood Chase. The individual ran back down Thornwood Chase. He was described as approximately 6ft with a dark complexion and was wearing a blue baseball hat, blue and white horizontal striped shirt and cut-off jean shorts.

We do not know the intent of this individual but find the event concerning. Please be careful.

Concerned Greensborough resident.

There was a meeting held on Monday July 5, 2010 and concluded that there are some deficiencies resulting from damages caused by others and therefore, we have been instructed to repair once again. These repairs have commenced following completion will be re-inspected by the Town. I don't anticipate anything being released prior to 90 days.

Just wondering if any of you experience this. I have had garage sales, and I price the things I sell very very cheap...like $1, .50cents..etc etc. But people in the neighbourhood come and they want a DISCOUNT!! What's up with that?!? I'm not saying everybody that came is like that, but majority was looking to walk away for things for pratically nothing. I understand it is a garage sale, and people are looking for bargains. But come on...a big item priced at $1 or $2 is not a bargain? I'm just a little annoyed with this issue. This experience had made me rather donate my things to charity...give it to people/families that are less fortunate.

Does anyone know if Mount Joy still have French Immersion Program in fall of 2010?
We will be moving to Greensborough and my child is starting Grade 1. We are not sure
if we should register for Mt. Joy as I heard that the new school Sam Chapman has taken over the F.I program and all the children in F.I programs are being transferred there form Mt. Joy. Then again, I heard a conflicting information from a secretary at the School Board itself stating that Mt. Joy still have F.I program, but when I called back again to confirm I was told they still have F.I programs at Mt. Joy. The school website and the information I am receiving are so confusing and no one is giving me a definite answer stating the schools are closed, everyone is on vacation, they do not have updated list / information etc. So I have to wait till end of August to find out.
Does anyone has children attending Mt. Joy in F.I program …did you receive any information as to whether the program will continue at Mt. Joy? Or being transferred to Sam Chapman? Please help. Thanks.

We currently have a wonderful full time nanny looking after our 2 children. In September 2010 our oldest child will be in school full time. We are looking for a family who is also looking for a nanny so we can share the one we have.

We will continue to provide her with room & board and pay our share of her employment taxes.

We are very flexible and are interested in finding the right match for our shared nanny arrangement. We look forward to hearing from you!

The ideal family will live near by (preferrably walking distance).

The last few times that I have been to the water park, some parents have let their children urinate on the trees and in the bushes. Personally, I find this to be quite gross. I know it is a losing battle b/c it is children, but wouldn't it be nice, if the parents of these children could or would take their children a little further from the park itself and have them go deeper in the forest and not right in front of others, and not right in a tree by a bench that people are sitting on. Just my opinion. No harm meant, just a personal conviction that I feel necessary to post.

Paramount Basements "finished" our basement this current year 2010. Design was well laid out. Quality was poor. When we had concerns about the workmanship, Stephen Busato dismissed them and would not change them to our wants. Examples: he took our old insulation, vapour barrier and all and tried to convince us that it was okay to reuse in the ceiling of our basement, had 2 pieces of drywall installed backwards and would not fix the mistake (even though he admitted the mistake), he was supposed to come back to remove dirt from the new window they installed and to finish the sod at the back, and to replace a window screen in May, then it was June and now it's July and it's still incomplete, the piping under the sink is a "L" pipe instead of a "u" pipe so now we experience sewage smell (finally got a hold of him using a phone # he didn't recognize, he gave us his word that he would come Mon. July 12/10 @ 11 a.m. to fix the pipe. 11 a.m. came and went, called his phone he didn't pick up and he hasn't responded to our many attempts to communicate with him), there was improper gaps in one of the door frames downstairs and he excused the work as uneven floors however, when we measured the distance at the top of the doorframe and the bottom of the doorframe, the measurements were not the same, we weren't satisfied with some of the tiling in the shower stall and asked him to rectify the mistake but again, he didn't correct it at the early stages (we gave him the benefit of the doubt because he’s the “professional” and when it was complete and we still weren't satisfied, he said that he could try and fix it but we would have to foot the bill for any damage to surrounding tiles that he may damage during the process, one of the two laundry room doors was installed backwards.

Just because you lost a $4-5 item that you left outside doesn't make the whole neighborhood some kinda threat... people from Scarborough moving to Greensborough won't make it ghetto, Yes theres a Nofrills near it... so what? Isn't there a nofrills everywhere now a days...so you live near the GoTrain station and isn't it obviously that you will hear the horn often... trust me they have better things to do then try to annoy you with their horns all day... and lastly some old car is parked on a lawn near your house and you're too embarrassed to let your friends see that that you had to tell them to take another route... seriously? Stop being such little princesses... and Greensborough is an awesome town so be realistic, you're not living in Pleasantville. Thank You!

Cornerstone has been doing a Free Community Car Wash every July for twelve years. Our hard-working volunteers will carefully hand wash and dry your car while you enjoy refreshments and conversation with our greeters. How much of a donation is expected? Actually, no donations are even accepted! What's the catch? There is no catch! This is simply a practical way of showing God's love to our community -- no strings attached!

Where: Markham Village Community Centre
When: Saturday July 10, 10am - 1pm

We have been having problems with our new air conditioning unit - it only cools the main floor but blows regular air upstairs (bedrooms) We have not had this problem in our previous homes with the air conditioning unit. The manufacturer changed the "coil" but still no success. The unit itself (outside) looks much smaller for the size home. Has anyone experienced this before? Your thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi Neighbours!

Please beware of door to door sales people who tell you that they are there to book an appointment to change your water tank to a Energy Star tank.

They make you believe that it is some kind of government project and you have no choice.

Here is an article about it with all the info:

Hello,
If anyone is looking for a good daycare around the area I would like to recommend you the Ivy League Montessori daycare which is located on Hwy #48 south of Major Mac (just across the Tim Hortons/Wendys). My two kids are attending this center and the care they have been getting is phenomenal. My daughter is 15 months and my son is 3.5 years old and they just love going to their school. The meals are prepared on site by their own cook and they are so good that my son is always saying “Mom, please ask Miss Linda for recipes, I love her food”. They always get lots of fresh fruit and great quality of homemade meals. Another thing I like a lot is the field trips the school organizes. Last month the kids learned about the full cycle of chick hatching. The teachers had an incubator in the classroom so the kids could appreciate the full hatching process. Once the chicks hatched the kids had a trip to an educational farm where the instructor provided them more detailed information about the cycle.
If you would like to get more information about this school you can contact them at 905 472 5500 or by email at info@ivyleaguemontessori.com. Please do not hesitate to send me a PM if you would like me to provide you more details about the quality of care my kids are getting from them.

Does anyone know in the neighbourhood if someone is offering this type of service to parents for a fee?

Has anyone experienced having their green bins 'ransacked'? In the 5 years that we have lived in our house, we put our green bin in our porch and we have been ransacked thrice. Any idea what could have made this? I don't think we have racoons in the area, do we?

Hi,
Just a note to make people aware of "No Frills" ad match policy. In their ad it states "If you find a cheaper price, simply show us and we will match" ... however if you read the fine print it reads " If a competitor (it goes on about the price match then at the end it states ... Our major competitors and geographical trade areas are determined solely by us and are based on a number of factors which can change from time to time." Simply put, they only match Sobey's, Walmart, Garden Basket and Food Basics as I have been told by the cashier. Not really a price match guarantee in my mind, just makes you look like a fool at the checkout counter. Reminds me of the sale signs that read "80% off" only to see in small print "up to" or in new home ads a picture showing the largest house and the caption that reads "Starting from $$$$"

Hello Everyone
The community center and library will serve the residence of the EAST end and this has been in discussion for some time now. There might be an additional 2 years delay with the start of construction, therefore can you join me in sending an email to the councillor and mayor to move forward with construction and avoid any further delays.

Update on Castlemore and Delray field (north West corner)

For those of you that live close the intersection of Castlemore and Delray, I called the Town of Markham this morning and spoke to the development/zoning dept to find out what was happening on the north west corner, it is being zoned as OS2 - meaning it is for a building - school/ community centre - he said most likely it's a school. The wooded lots (forest) will stay so assuming that is where the park will be built - next to the wooded lots. For those of us living on Delray facing the current empty field of land - we'll be looking at potentially the school or parking lot.

This post and thread is here to shed some light on the policies of a Markham childcare facility and the impact these policies have on children. We have had our kids enrolled at All Smiles Childcare in Markham for just under a year and for the most part happy with the care of the children. Teachers are nice, but the owner had no issue in causing emotional distress to a 4 and 2 year old. To only state facts after questioning why a third teacher had left a class in 9 months, we were told it was part of the business and told to go elsewhere if we had any concerns. We gave notice (30 days) as per the contract to which the owner waited until pick-up on the following day to send an email from off-site stating it was effective immediately, had the kids items packed up and an escort to walk them out as our four year old son and 2 year old daughter were picked up. Kids, teachers in tears and the owner nowhere to be found and when we asked for a contact number were informed she only had one and that was the centre. Word of caution on attending this centre as the owner/director has no issue in using kids as a pawn and taking retaliatory measures, if you take exception to any of her policies and attempt to discuss with her. I welcome comments from other parents as there is no form of recourse for the emotional trauma caused to the children. The Nurseries act only covers tangibles and Children's aid has no ruling on poor judgment. Granted it's a private business but we're not talking lawnmowers here, it's our children.
